Wild Wild West Con - Joshua Reed Photography

Awesome Times in the Wild Wild West Steampunk Style

I have waited entirely to long to write this blog post.  In my defense school and work have been crazy.  This was the second year I have been invited to photograph the Wild Wild West Steampunk convention.  And like last year I had a great time.

The feeling this year though was a little different than last year.  I had a little more experience this year and could focus more on just enjoying myself and taking in the experience.

First stop was the pre-event activities the night before the con started.  Loop Rawlins and Circus Amperean put on a spectacular performance.  This was a difficult evening for me photography wise.  I didn't rent any lenses this year and my camera isn't exactly a low light super star.  I would have done well to have a f2.8 lens or two to help with low light.  Instead I relied on a speedlight on camera and some good positioning.

I was given the assignment this year to document the tea dueling.  For those not in the know tea dueling is when two (or in some cases more) sit over a cup of tea.  They are each given a biscuit (cookie) to dip in the tea.  The goal is to be the last person to eat the biscuit before it crumbles.  I don't do this description nearly the justice it deserves.  You have to listen to the lovely Madame Askew describe how to play.

Tea Dueling

I mentioned getting to see familiar faces.  I already mentioned that my friend Jocelynne (aka Madame Askew) was there.  Glen also showed up to help with the tea dueling.

John Strangeway made an appearance.  But I didn't get much of a chance to visit with him due to a packed schedule.  John, Sabrina, Mark, and Paul from the Foundry were there running the Science and Technology room.  John's Gentleman Robot Battle Armor was a huge hit.  Tales tell of an epic battle between he and Thomas Willeford in his Ironman 1889 armor.

Poplock Holmes made the trip to the convention this year and was nice enough to let me snap a few photos.

I also got to meet a few new folks.  The Airship Ambassador was the MC for many of the events and a great person to get to know.  I also met the lovely Unwoman.  She has an amazing voice and has a great performance.  If you get the chance to see her show I highly recommend it.

I've heard the saying that you have to be willing to bleed for your art.  This year I had that covered.  I had an embarrassing moment during the Steam Powered Giraffe panel when a chair I was kneeling on gave way and my leg went crashing through.  Nothing to damaged except my pride.

I enjoyed the event this year.  There was so much to see and do I could keep writing for the entire evening.  Instead I'll leave you to enjoy the photos.  Click on the Gallery below to check them out.
